Simone Weil

Simone Weil

$10.47

Philosopher, theologian, critic, sociologist, political activist Simone Weil was among the foremost thinkers of our time. Best known in this country for her theological writing, Weil wrote on a great variety of subjects ranging from classical philosophy and poetry, to modern labor, to the language of political discourse. The present anthology offers a generous collection of the work, including essays never before translated into English and many that have long been out of print. It amply confirms Elizabeth Hardwick`s words that Simone Weil was "one of the most brilliant and original minds of twentieth century France" and "a woman of transcendent intellectual gifts and the widest learning." A longtime Weil scholar, Sian Miles has selected essays representative of the wide sweep of Weil`s work and provides a superb introduction that places Weil`s work in context of her life and times.

In 2007, Collectables reissued ten classic Nina Simone albums, nine of which were originally released on the Colpix label. THE AMAZING NINA SIMONE and NINA SIMONE AT TOWN HALL date from 1959; NINA SIMONE AT NEWPORT is from 1960, and FORBIDDEN FRUIT came out in 1961; NINA SINGS ELLINGTON and NINA SIMONE AT THE VILLAGE GATE (courtesy of Roulette Records) appeared in 1962. NINA'S CHOICE and NINA SIMONE AT CARNEGIE HALL are vintage 1963; FOLKSY NINA is emblematic of 1964, and NINA WITH STRINGS, the latest of the albums reissued here, is dated 1966. This six-CD set covers more ground than both the Roulette and Rhino reissues of Simone's Colpix material, a body of work that documents her career between her early Bethlehem sessions and the universally acclaimed records she cut for Phillips during the late '60s.

The late great jazz singer Nina Simone is featured in this program from Kultur performing two scarcely seen studio sets in the early '60s. Among the songs included in Nina Simone Live are "Sunday in Savannah," "I'll Look Around," "I Was in My Prime," "For All We Know," "Strawberry Woman," "Crab Man..." "I Loves You," and "Porgy." ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Nina Simone and Piano!

Nina Simone and Piano!

$6.99

Solo performer: Nina Simone (vocals, piano, organ, tambourine).Recorded in September and October 1968. Includes original liner notes by Tom Reed and reissue liner notes by David Nathan.Digitally remastered by Mike Harty and Bill Lacey. Her own best accompanist (especially during the crossover-happy '60s), Nina Simone sings and plays on this 1970 LP. With strident vocals and a thoughtful piano backing, Simone makes her own a pair of radically different (though similarly fatalistic) compositions, Blind Willie Johnson's "Nobody's Fault But Mine" and Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today." Her version of "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" leans dangerously close to avant-garde overkill, but she returns with good performances on "Compensation" and "Who Am I?" A great moment comes when a tambourine finally joins her midway through "Another Spring," and the lone jazz standard ("I Get Along Without You Very Well") is given a touching performance. In an era when Simone often veered from crossover to experimental, Nina Simone and Piano! is undeniably difficult, but frequently rewarding. ~ John Bush

The title, The Nina Simone Collection, and the sheer number of tracks assembled here, 43, would lead a buyer to expect that this box set offers a carefully compiled overview of this great singer's catalog. A glance at the track list would seem to confirm this: many of Simone's most important benchmarks are accounted for: "I Loves You Porgy," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," "My Baby Just Cares for Me," "Mississippi Goddam," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," et. al. But a closer perusal reveals a whole lot of asterisks next to song titles, and in tiny lettering at the bottom of the package the truth is revealed: "* live tracks." Some 26 of those 43 tracks have that asterisk, which means that the buyer is not getting Simone's original, classic studio recordings but rather concert recordings of same, from undisclosed dates and locations (neither the liner notes nor the packaging reveal the sources). That's not necessarily a bad thing: Simone live was a formidable force, capable of moving an audience like few others. And the live recordings here, as well as the other 17 tracks, are all fine indeed. But perhaps it might have been more forthcoming to drop one disc, put the live tracks on the remaining two, and just call it what it really is. ~ Jeff Tamarkin

Personnel includes: Nina Simone (vocals).Producers: A.C.F.N.S. Productions, Stroud Productions, Danny Davis.Compilation producer: Paul Williams.Recorded between 1968 and 1971. Includes liner notes by David Nathan. The legendary and ever-eclectic Nina Simone had already recorded a number of albums for Bethlehem, Colpix, and Philips before moving on to RCA in 1967. THE ESSENTIAL NINA SIMONE VOL.2 mainly focuses on two albums from her RCA period. Included are six tracks from her 1969 release, NINA SIMONE AND PIANO.The album is by turns intimate, human, rough, emotional, and avant-garde. Take, for instance, her stunning version of Leonard Bernstein's strange song about reincarnation "Who Am I?" with jarringly atonal piano lines and deeply rich and heartfelt vocals, or her version of "Another Spring," an almost operatic monologue where an old woman looks back and then reflects on life. Nina Simone's emotional sorcery here is compelling. The other album featured on this compilation is the lushly produced HERE COMES THE SUN, with arrangements by Simone and Harold Wheeler, released in 1971 and sounding very much of its time. The six tracks included here are typically eclectic, and feature a moving version of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman," as well as a rousing bongo-driven take of Frank Sinatra's theme song, "My Way."
