Victorian Working-class Women Poets $32.62 The voices of Victorian working-class women are rarely heard. The fact that any poetry written by such women has survived is a miracle. Boos (English, University of Iowa) has rescued some of these poems along with prose writing and autobiographies. Her introduction reinforces the difficulty of either men or women outside of the educational establishment. Women, especially, were considered illiterate and invisible. It is only through the efforts of a few men and two women who desired to publish works by and for farmers and factory workers among others, that the poetry was printed. Boos notes that then, as now, the subject matter was governed by the tastes and prejudices of the editors and readers. Therefore, while it is likely that many women wrote strident, passionate poems, a large number of those published reflected the sentimental tastes of the Victorian era.
