Rabin has done an excellent job here of creating a score that supports a film that spends much of its time doing the flawed-men-against-impossible-odds routine. There are moments of sensitivity here and there, though the project itself hardly allowed for subtlety -- the themes are suitably grand (and grandiose), performed with energy, and given plenty of adrenalin-triggering flourishes (as well as a lot of support from a battery of crisp snare drums.) As a nice bonus, the CD uses the CD-TEXT protocol, which provides the track titles via the main display of CD-TEXT-enabled players -- unfortunately, the album title is misspelled as "Amrageddon." Original Soundtrack - Radio Days [Original Jive Soundtrack] $6.99 Even more so than with most of the soundtracks to Woody Allen`s movies, Radio Days is filled with a strong nostalgic tone, comprised as it is of material from the heyday of the swing era, which coincides with the movie`s era and setting. Its appeal is, thus, not limited to fans of the movie Radio Days -- rather, owing to the care with which Allen selects the music for his films (and the work of music supervisor Dick Hyman), it`s also a superb primer for late-`30s and early-`40s popular music; anyone unfamiliar with the field could do a whole lot worse than start with a collection that includes some of the most popular and enduring recordings by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Sammy Kaye, Benny Goodman, Xavier Cugat, Richard Himber & His Ritz-Carlton Orchestra, and Guy Lombardo, as well as pop vocalist Allan Jones. And those who know this material will enjoy the compilation as well, even if it overlaps with a lot else. Indeed, they might even rent or buy the movie, which is sort of the purpose of releases like this in the first place, though the CD is also enjoyable on its own terms. Among the great moments captured here is a live rendition of "Molly Maguires," which is simply transcendent in its intensity and passion, followed by "McAlpine`s Fusiliers" (live from another venue), as restrained as the prior number is boisterous until the banjo break, when it takes on a larger-than-life quality. Besides the leadoff song, highlights such as "Whiskey in the Jar," "All for Me Grog," and "The Rising of the Moon" (those just from their albums Seven Drunken Nights and More of the Hard Stuff) are worth the price of admission, and there`s a lot more here -- indeed, the contents of more than half a dozen LPs have been shuffled and jumbled up among the three discs, and the producers weren`t afraid to draw upon live and studio renditions of the same songs, which only increases the fun. On the contrary, this On Your Toes used the original book, written by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, and George Abbott, and Abbott, the original director was, at age 95, directing the show again. Similarly, the music, in the hands of two restoration experts, conductor John Mauceri and "coordinator of music materials" John McGlinn, hewed closely to the original performances, as original orchestrator Hans Spialek, at age 89, supervised the work and was present in the recording studio. So, this is a faithful recording of the music of On Your Toes, which is a good thing, since there was no recording of the original cast (1936 was about seven years before cast recordings started to become common), and previous attempts to record the score were either incomplete (the 1952 studio cast album on Columbia Records) or somewhat revisionist (the 1954 Broadway revival cast album on Decca). Unfortunately, faithfulness is not the only consideration in recording a musical score. There is also the cast to consider, and the 1954 cast was more distinctive than the 1983 one, particularly Elaine Stritch (who was given an interpolated Rodgers & Hart standard, "You Took Advantage of Me," to go with her character`s two duets, a number of course not present here), who had it all over Dina Merrill in the supporting role of Peggy Porterfield. In the leads, Lara Teeter and Christine Andreas do a good, but unremarkable job. The really impressive element of this version is all the instrumental music. On Your Toes has a lot of it, given its story of vaudeville versus the ballet, and "La Princesse Zenobia Ballet" is given a rare recording here, to go with the big closing ballet, "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." Daltrey, who starred in the film and co-produced it, sings on eight of the ten tracks. McVicar was Roger Daltrey`s highest charting non-Who project, and for a simple reason: it sounds a lot like The Who. On his three previous solo albums, Daltrey had gone out of his way to avoid the hard rock sound of The Who. But here, using a set of backup musicians that included all the other members of the group -- Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones -- Daltrey employed his usual arena-shaking shout over Who-like music. Daltrey sounded more comfortable with such material than he had with the sometimes delicate pop of his other solo records, and you could hear his delight when he had a song like Russ Ballard`s "My Time Is Gonna Come," more unadulterated hard rock, to work with. Like Zimmer, he maintains parallel interests in traditional symphonic scoring and in heavily programmed music, and this lengthy score seems designed to show off his versatile talents. Tracking a globe-hopping adventure tale, he dips into various ethnic styles, making room for Middle Eastern vocals (courtesy of Khosro Ansari) on "Explosion & Aftermath," for example, and seems to delight in sudden juxtapositions, such as in "Red Shirt," where a grand symphonic theme emerges four minutes into the track after lots of percussion programming, only to submerge again. Similarly, a calm piano theme begins "You`re Going to Miss It," then gives way to electronic effects. There may be some hope for electronica and dance crossover here in tracks like "Training Montage," and in the two remixes that close the disc. This is music for a fast-paced thriller with a lot of exotic settings, and it no doubt helps get hearts pounding in movie theaters, even if it is a bit too various for its own good as a merely aural experience. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
