Dream's on Jeri $22.99 Jasmine Records has culled 22 songs from live performances, radio broadcasts, transcriptions and other "irregular" sources by the very fine vocalist/pianist Jeri Southern. Southern, the epitome of a singer from the cool school, was a major Decca, Roulette and Capitol recording artist during the 1950s before she got fed up with the companies' A&R types trying to make her a pop star...and simply quit. The playlist on this collection is a mixed bag, as it often was with Southern's releases. From time to time, she got trapped into singing some really trite material; a prime example on this album is "It Must Be True," where the best thing one can say is that every effort was made to have a pleasant rhyming metier. Fortunately, most of the playlist, if not all familiar standards, are listenable and enjoyable as rendered by Southern. There are also tunes closely associated with the languid Southern style, like two versions of her signature tune "You Better Go Now." On the first, she accompanies herself on piano, and on the second, she is backed by an orchestra headed by Jerry Gray. Both use considerably different arrangements than her classic Decca recording from the mid-1950s. The title tune, "This Time the Dream's on Me," not only features her excellent phrasing and respect for lyrics, but her very good, understated piano playing as well. Southern could at times sound fragile and startled like a doe, and sardonic other times, her mood depending on the song; Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" is endowed with all the irony befitting the composer/dramatist's tune, while her fragility emerges on "I Thought of You Last Night" and "Something I Dreamed Last Night." Southern could also swing; listen to her bounce on "I Hadn't Anyone Till You," "It's D'Lovely" and "Married I Can Always Get," where she's helped along by male backup singers. She also goes Latin on "We're Not Children Anymore." Overall, The Dream's on Jeri is a blue-ribbon compilation of performances by a singer whose star shone far too briefly. Listeners are warned that there are a few instances where there's some background noise. This is understandable given the source of the material and is not a major distraction. ~ Dave Nathan |

Jeri Brown - April In Paris $14.84 Personnel: Jeri Brown (vocals); Roberto De Brashov (accordion); Alain Jean-Marie (piano); Pierre Michelot (bass); John Betsch (drums).Jeri Brown, who has emerged to become one of the top jazz singers of the 1990s, pays tribute to the passion of Paris on this CD without performing the title cut. Sticking to ballads (other than a medium-tempo "Summertime"), Brown`s sensuous voice (particularly her low notes) are well suited to the complex material, which includes a song co-written with Kenny Wheeler ("Gentle Piece"), a pair of Michel Legrand numbers that add the effective accordion of Roberto De Brashov, a brief poem, a couple of standards and mostly high-quality obscurities. The title pays homage to the up-tempo bebop classic penned by Cedar Walton which inspired Brown`s treatment of "The Roots of Life." This program also contains a fine selection of original arrangements that Brown wrote for such great songs as "Feeling Good"and "What the World Needs Now," among others. These skills help to place her in the same group of illustrious jazz vocalists/arrangers as Nnenna Freelon or Karrin Allyson, with respect to arranging and vocalizing the poetic necessities it takes to capture listeners from the first note sung or played. However, Jeri Brown`s own style is full of reasons for a standing ovation. Anyone looking for proof that her cultural excellence stems from her inspired roots in gospel, jazz, and classical depths need only take one listen to her renditions of R&B, rock and pop favorites "With a Child`s Heart,""We May Never Pass This Way Again," or "Will It Go Round in Circles." Brown has a beautiful honey-flavored voice and the musical personality of a positive, idealistic, soft-spoken poet but her life experiences filter through on these songs with the illumination of a 100-watt bulb. Jeri Brown - The Image In The Mirror $14.84 Personnel: Jeri Brown (vocals); Milt Sealey (piano); Avery Sharpe (bass); Grady Tate (drums).Jazz still has some risk-taking singers like Jeri Brown, who doesn`t spend all of her time providing predictable, knee-jerk versions of overdone warhorses. There isn`t a warhorse to be found on The Image in the Mirror: The Triptych; everything on this CD was written or co-written by pianist Milton Sealey. Brown (who is joined by Sealey on piano, Avery Sharpe on bass, and Grady Tate on drums) has never been a clone artist -- even her interpretations of standards have sounded personal. And on this album, she uses Sealey`s attractive post-bop melodies to make personal statements. This is a highly introspective CD, although it`s also quite accessible -- for Brown, introspective doesn`t mean going out of her way to be abstract. Brown gives great emphasis and feeling to the often sensuous (and occasionally witty) lyrics. June Christy/Jeri Southern - Something Latin/Something Porter [5/5] $15.26 The DRG label does it again, reissuing a couple of long unavailable albums by great American jazz singers, pairing June Christy`s SOMETHING BROADWAY SOMETHING LATIN from 1965 with Jeri Southern`s MEETS COLE PORTER from 1959. Ms. Christy began her career as a singer for Stan Kenton`s jazz orchestra in the `50s and then had a lengthy solo career. One of her late albums, SOMETHING finds her going in something of a pop direction , covering then-popular Broadway show tunes and a few bossa nova items. While not Christy at her very best, devotees will welcome this back to the catalog. Southern`s PORTER is the gem, though--backed by Billy May`s classy, uncharacteristically elegant arrangements, Southern wraps her melancholic style beautifully around some lesser-known Porter classics.
