Brown.Recorded at Idful Music Corporation, Chicago, Illinois, from November 29 to December 5, 1993.Unless you go back to their `70s influences (everything from dub to fusion to Eno), very little prefigured the arrival of Chicago`s Tortoise. They helped create and virtually define what became known as post-rock, venturing beyond pop/rock song-structure and forsaking lyrics altogether in search of a newer, more expansive style. This self-titled debut finds the band embryonic but undeniably accomplished.The dub influence on Tortoise`s largely rhythm-based tracks is at its strongest here, and the interplay of bass, drums, percussion and marimba forms the nucleus of the sound. The Steve Reich and Ennio Morricone-influenced modes the band would later explore are faintly suggested. Instead of incorporating their former cut-and-paste method of composition on their fourth full-length album, the quintet return to playing and interacting with each other in a live setting, resulting in a much more organic feel.The opener "The Benway" begins STANDARDS auspiciously, with rubato bursts of distorted guitar and free-floating drums, in an homage to jazz-rock guitarist Sonny Sharrock. From here on anything goes, as plaintive analog synth melodies vie with electronically processed percussion, Jeff Parker`s trademark angular guitar riffs, and some of the trashiest-sounding drums this side of NUGGETS. As ever, Tortoise incorporates elements of electronic music, modern classical, experimental/avant garde, and hip-hop in a format that references the group`s rock roots without ever bowing to rock convention. Jabuti the Tortoise $13.76 This retelling of a traditional story from the rain forests of the Amazon explains why tortoises have cracks on their shells. Jabuti is a tortoise with a smooth shell who loves playing tricks on all the other creatures but is also a wonderful musician. Because he can't make any music at all, a vulture is very jealous of Jabuti's musical talent. He offers to fly Jabuti to the King of Heaven's festival of song, but then seeks his revenge by dropping Jabuti from the sky. The fall cracks Jabuti's shell but luckily the King of Heaven intervenes and commands the birds to patch Jabuti's shell--resulting in the cracked and patched appearance of all tortoise shells. Gouache, colored pencil, and colored ink illustrations accompany the text. |
